This building appears to have been built as a type of barn or agricultural outbuilding. There are no openings that suggest an original residential use. The building has a gable roof covered with wood shingles. The gable ends are covered with board and batten siding. The walls are made up of closely spaced horizontal logs with little space for chinking. Little of the original chinking is extant. The corners are roughly joined. The building is in poor to ruinous condition and may not stand for too many years without reinforcement. The building adds to the architectural significance of the Jost farmstead as a good example of log construction in the Town of Jefferson. Although it is in poor condition, it can be studied for its information regarding the construction of log buildings in southwestern Monroe County. It is typical of early construction in the area in that it is known that many buildings were constructed of log, then covered over with other materials and/or added to. Few of these buildings are exposed. Those that are, are significant. |
