| Additional Comments | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. 2011- Appearance unchanged. The Keeper's Quarters were constructed in 1888 as well, with the one-story addition connecting the residence with the lighthouse in 1912. 1980- Original entry. "In 1855, the North Point Lighthouse was built on a low bluff to guide the growing numbers of ships on the Great Lakes. As the bluff began to erode, a new light tower and a Queen Anne-style keeper's quarters were built, set back 100 feet west, in 1888. In 1893, renowned landscaped architect Frederick Law Omsted unveiled Lake Park, his lyrical landscape masterpiece with North Point Lighthouse as the crown jewel. The lighthouse would enjoy more then one hundred years of reign and responsibility to the mariners on Lake Michigan, before falling into disuse and disrepair, and finally being decommissioned in 1994 by the U.S. Coast Guard. Modern navigational aids and the ever-growing trees planted on the bluffs extinguished her light. In 2002, North Point Lighthouse Friends, Inc., a non-profit group, was formed to restore the lighthouse. Their mission is to preserve the lighthouse, connect its public to its place in history, and to make it available to the community in ways compatible with its neighborhood. Since its rededication in 2007, the Lighthouse has welcomed thousands of visitors during its weekend public hours from 1-4 p.m., including school groups, scout troops, and community groups. The facility also hosts lectures, non-profit events and special events, including weddings and corporate events."
