A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation-Public History. Features unusual saltbox roof; front porch has a half-hipped roof and displays original turned posts and spindlework; house is embellished with segmental-arch openings, segmental-arch brick lintels, and stone sills. The 1901 Atlas of Trempealeau County only indicates the property as located within the Village of Independence; however, it also hints that the house may have at this time been part of a farm. The 1962 Rockford Atlas indicates Lee Hutchins as the owner of the house and 28 acres. Later Rockford Atlas maps of the area, however, do not indicate landowners and the property is only shown as being located within the City of Independence. Many early buildings constructed in Independence were built of red brick, which was readily available from local factories. The first known brick factory in Independence was established by Ferdinand Horst in 1882. It is thought that many of the red brick houses standing today originated from his factory, although no specific connections were made during the survey. |
