NAER INVENTORY (06/1979): The main building of the Dufeck Manufacturing Co. is a two-story, gable roof structure of wood, concrete and concrete block construction, with a rectangular floor plan and measuring approximately 100' x 45'. Concrete walls of the facility are 12 inches thick, while the concrete ceiling in 16 inches thick. The site also contains an adjacent 1 1/2, story brick boiler house with shed roof and metal chimney, and at least two additions to the main building, with shed or flat roofs and concrete/concrete block construction. The Dufeck Manufacturing Co. began operations in Brown County in about 1908. It moved to Denmark when railroad tracks were built in the town in about 1912. Shortly thereafter Dufeck's original wooden building at the Denmark site burned down. Another wooden building was built in its place a short while later (ca 1912); the wooden walls were used as forms for the pouring of the concrete walls (in ca 1915) that make up the facility today. The brick boiler house was constructed about the same time as the second wooden building. The additions mentioned above were constructed at some time between 1915 and 1945. The Dufeck firm, which at one time included a planing mill as well, originally made wooden shingles and cheese boxes. In 1934 the company was said to do $200,000 annually in business and employed 30 persons in its saw mill, planing mill and box factory. Today (1979) the firm manufactures wooden pallets for packing of garden and kitchen equipment, novelty, and wine and cheese boxes.
