A 'site file' titled "Menomonee River Parkway" exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. 2011- Hoyt Park was acquired between 1926 and 1936 because of its strategic position in relation to the parkway system. The park's primary attraction between 1926 and 1928 was its significant growth of shade trees. The County Park Commission's early plans for Hoyt Park included a swimming pool, bathhouse, pedestrian bridge, and stone retaining walls (all extant) crossing the river. The CCC also constructed a stone suspension foot bridge leading from the parkway to Hoyt Park. The park includes modern playgrounds, nonpermanent athletic fields, picnic area, a swimming poll, bathhouse, and paved pedestrian paths. Deciduous trees and open areas are found throughout the park. Modern and decorative acorn lights line the drives and paths. Hoyt Park is part of the Upper Menomonee River Parkway System. Hoyt Park was established by Milwaukee County as a part of the Upper Menomonee River Parkway in 1926. The 34-acre facility was purchased by the City of Wauwatosa in 1928 and renamed Emerson D. Hoyt Park. A non-extant public pool was constructed on the site in 1931. The park was transferred back to the Milwaukee Park Commission in 1936, and the Civilian Conservation Corp constructed a larger concrete pool with an accompanying filtration and purification plant, which opened in 1939. A suspension bridge and a Swan Boulevard automobile traffic bridge were constructed in 1939. The pool was removed and reconstructed in 2010, and the bathhouse was remodeled the same year. |
