WIDE OVERHANGING EAVES W/EXPOSED RAFTER ENDS. 8/8 WINDOWS W/STILTED SILLS. 2ND FLR BALCONY W/LARGE STILTS AT BASE. DOOR W/HIGH SIDELIGHTS AND TRANSOM. 1 STORY SIDE BALCONIED BAY. This two-story stuccoed house was built for Solon and Mathilda Sutliff in 1923, and remained in the Sutliff family until at least 1965 (1920 and 1929 Sanborn Map of Rhinelander; Rhinelander telephone books). Sutliff came to Rhinelander in 1904, and worked as a traveling lumber salesman for the Brown Brothers Lumber Company. He established his own business, Rhinelander Lumber and Coal, in 1908, and had the Sutliff and Riverside Additions to Rhinelander platted. Sutliff was a member of the board of directors of the First National Bank,the Oneida National Bank, the Thunder Lake Lumber Company, and the Rhinelander Building and Loan Association, and served as mayor of Rhinelander in 1918-20 (History of Lincoln,Oneida and Vilas Counties, p. 240). It is an example of the Italian Renaissance variant of the Mediterranean Revival style, with its symmetrical facade, tile main and pent roofs, exposed rafters, balconet on corbels, and panels enriched with swags. The Sutliff House is an excellent and intact (and apparently the only) local example of the Italian Renaissance variant of the Mediterranean Revival style. |
