2017-NRHP District Nomination Per the Sanborn Maps of the City of Green Gay, a two-story commercial building was built on this site sometime between 1887 and 1894. The address is first mentioned in the Daily State Gazette newspaper in 1890 with J. Gigler, cigar manufacturer, located here. The building is described as H. T. E. Berendsen’s new office building. Sanborn maps suggest that a large oriel window was added to the second story between 1900 and 1907. In 1952 that two-story building was drastically altered; the second story was removed, an addition was constructed at the rear (more specifically, this south side addition joined this building with a very small, independent, extant structure behind 312 Cherry), and a new north façade was constructed on what remained of the original building. The one-story building that exists here today is the result of this 1952 Barnard Corp. remodeling of the much older two-story building. The front (north) façade of this building is red brick, arranged in an American bond pattern with a soldier course at the top and a soldier course at the foundation. A door is at the right side of the front façade. The door and a rectangular window at left are recessed, with cast stone on the façade defining the opening of the recessed space. An integral brick plantar is located below the entrance window in this recessed space. A second rectangular window, surrounded with cast stone, is located at the left side of the front façade. The windows and door have been replaced, and an awning and signage differentiate today’s appearance of the building from its 1950s-era appearance. The east façade of this building, facing the parking lot for the adjacent Sophie Beaumont Building (111 N. Jefferson), is clad in stone veneer matching that on the Frankenthal Building (124-130 N. Adams). As with the veneer on the Frankenthal Building, this matching veneer was installed in 1992. Although this building is simple, its 1950s-era front façade is appropriate to the historic period of the district. This building is one of several in the district that has a newer style façade on a significantly older building. |
