| Additional Comments | 2026: The Marion Milling Company building is a two-and-one-half-story, square-plan grist mill constructed in 1920. It is of brick masonry construction and has a fieldstone foundation. The building has a metal-covered hip roof featuring a one-story, metal-clad, flat-roof addition and hip-roof dormers on the front (northwest) facade and side (southwest and northeast) elevations. The roof also has exposed rafter tails and is topped by milling machinery and vents. Windows are original, wood, one-over-one and two-over-two sash, and fixed units with concrete sills and lintels. The windows on the facade’s second story are infilled with wood. The facade has a one-story, hip-roof projection with an entrance featuring wood double doors. A wood loading dock with metal shed roof and two secondary entrances are on the southwest elevation. A concrete flume with three sluice gates is situated on the northeast elevation, along the river. A secondary entrance is located on the northeast elevation at basement level. A concrete-block and metal-clad, one-story addition extends off the rear (southeast) elevation. Prior to the construction of the subject grist mill, a c.1870 lumber mill and an 1882 grist mill were located at the site. The previous grist mill remained in operation until May 1916, when it was destroyed by fire. Following the fire, the site remained vacant for four years. In 1919 Harvey Luschow purchased the land and water rights to construct a new grist mill. The new mill was built on the fieldstone foundation of the previous mill by local contractors Anton Klaeser, and P. C. Rogers. Work started in late 1919 and was completed in February 1920. The new mill was named the Marion Milling Company. In the decades following, the mill continued to serve the local community and region until ceasing operations in 2020. |
