South Hall was built in 1897/8 (opened September 6, 1898) to replace the main normal school building that had been destroyed by fire in November, 1897. The 3 story red brick building had a gymnasium separated from the main structure in an annex and the first floor contained a model school (later called the campus school) and art and music rooms. The second floor contained recitation rooms and the third floor held science laboratories. There were also free baths for students who roomed in private houses without bathes.
