1973: "The Fifth Ward School is the work of prominent local architects George B. Ferry and Alfred Clas. Its architectural style is characteristic of academic buildings of that time. Less picturesque in style is the north wing of the school added in 1928. In 1927, the school was renamed to honor Jacques Vieau, French-Canadian trader and south side pioneer.
Alterations and Additions (as of 1973):
Numerous alterations have been made to update the interior of the school.
Permit No. 23569, September 29, 1928, permit to build an addition to the north side of the school; architect George Wiley; cost $230,000. This three story addition provided twelve extra classrooms to the existing facility."
A Guide to Historic Walker's Point, 1978: "The existing building replaced an earlier Fifth Ward School. Milwaukee architects Ferry and Clas designed many well-known Milwaukee buildings, including the main building of the Public Library on Wisconsin Avenue.
Less ornamental in style, the north wing, planned by George Wiley, was added during the late 1920s. In 1927 the school was renamed to honor Jacques Vieau, French-Canadian trader and north-side pioneer (as well as father-in-law of the east side's founder, Solomon Juneau).
Built of brick with warmly-colored terra-cotta trim, the building massing suggests the Flemish Renaissance, especially towards the top, but the details are less easily explained. There are four Gothic buttresses which divide the tripartite Fourth Street facade."
