The Lawrence University Memorial Chapel is a rectangular, end-gable-roofed, random ashlar limestone structure of imposing Georgian Revival design. The south facing facade features a monumental, pedimented, portico extending the full width of the elevation with 6 fluted columns on pedestals sheltering the pedimented entrances. The pediment is ornamented with a motif of high relief swag flanking a shield. Rising from the main roof just behind the portico is the elaboratley articulated domed belfry resting on a tall square base. The side elevations are divided into 6 bays with the central four articulated with monumental wooden arcade Palladian windows with blind fans on the upper level over richly enframed tripartite fround floor windows. The rear elevation is obscured by a modern, flat-roofed, brick and east concrete panel classroom building. The Lawrence Memorial Chapel contributes to the significance of the Lwrence University Historic District under Criterion C as a superb example of early twentieth century Georgian Revival design. Perhaps the most distinguished example in Wisconsin of a Georgian Revival church structure, the Lawrence Chapel is notable for its fine proportions, authentic detailing and thoughtful use of local building materials to coordinate with the campus early twentieth century architectural theme. This structure was previously surveyed in 1991. Within the two years to follow, a metal, glass and concrete panel addition was made to the rear to connect the chapel and the music department building to the west. |
