| Additional Comments | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. A corner structure, the Chamberlin residence is a two story frame building which originally had a mansard roof (C). After a lightning strike around 1904 that roof was replaced by the intersecting shingled gables which evokes a more picturesque mood. The dwelling also features paired brackets at the roofline and a classically detailed veranda which is an additional modification. Clarence Chamberlin constructed this residence on the northeast corner of W. Grand and Third Avenues in 1882. (A) He settled in Eau Claire in 1856 and worked for the Ingram and Kennedy Lumber Co. In 1881, this company was reorganized as the Empire Lumber Co. Chamberlin was listed as assistant secretary of the Empire Lumber Company and served on their board of directors. He also was the secretary of the Half Moon Lake Canal Company in 1882 and in 1908 as the secretary-treasurer of the Eau Claire Linen Mill Company (C). He served on numerous other boards until his death in 1911. 2016- "This house represents the evolution in residential architectural styles between 1881 and 1904 from the Second Empire to Queen Anne/Classical Revival, reflecting the changing tastes of the period. Constructed in Second Empire style in 1881, it was remodeled circa 1904 as a result of fire caused by a lightning strike. The remodeling added many fine elements of the Queen Anne/Classical Revival style. The original mansard roof, for example, was replaced by intersecting shingled gables. Clarence Chamberlin settled in Eau Claire in 1856 and worked for the Ingram and Kennedy Lumber Company as a salesman. The firm was reorganized as the Empire Lumber Company in 1881 and Chamberlin served on their board of directors.
