Additional Comments THIS THREE-STORY, FIVE-BAY COMMERCIAL STRUCTURE IS CONSTRUCTED PRIMARILY OF BROWN BRICK. RUSTICATED PILASTERS WITH STYLIZED CAPITALS RUN THE HEIGHT OF THE BUILDING, EMBELLISHING THE MOULDED CEMENT BLOCK FACADE AND THE BROWN BRICK ELEVATION ON THE WEST SIDE. A SMALL CORNICE AND TRANSOM WINDOW OVER THE THREE STORE FRONTS AND FOUR OVER FOUR WINDOWS FURTHER CHARACTERIZE THIS LARGE COMMERCIAL BLOCK. SOME ALTERATION OF THE STREET LEVEL FACADE AND SIDE ELEVATION HAS TAKEN PLACE. THE REAR WALL IS COMPOSED OF MOULDED CONCRETE BLOCKS.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE:

BECAUSE OF ITS LARGE SIZE, THIS EARLY 20TH CENTURY COMMERCIAL STRUCTURE IS VISUALLY IMPORTANT TO THE COMMERCIAL DISTRICT. IN ADDITION, IT ADDS TO THE VARIETY OF THE DISTRICT BECAUSE OF ITS EARLY 20TH CENTURY STYLE.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE:

THIS BUILDING WAS ERECTED IN 1913 BY THE PLATTEVILLE LUMBER AND FUEL COMPANY AS AN OFFICE BUILDING. THE LUMBER YARD WAS AT THE END OF MAIN STREET. (SEE BIB. REF. A, B)
