Architectural/Engineering Significance:
This structure contributes to the significance of the Nathan Strong Park Historic District under Criterion C as a fine example of a Queen Anne house with a handsome porch with sawn board fretwork. The gable ornaments and bargebords are other examples of the less common pierced board type of Queen Anne trim. Although the house has been altered by the enclosure of a small side porch to form a sunroom probably in the 1920's, and an overall recladding in wide steel siding it still retains its characteristic historic appearance.
Historical Background:
In 1885 this house was built by Fred W. Sacket. Mr. Sacket and his two brothers inherited a cranberry marsh north of Berlin in the early 1860's. Fred sold his interest in the marsh in 1880. He was married to Francis Campbell, daughter of R. G. Campbell, who established the Berlin Marble Works in 1863. [1].
Fred Sacket worked for L. C. Smith, who ran a hardware store, for a couple of years until the business closed. Mr. Sacket then returned to private life. [1].
Mrs. Sacket died in 1926 and their daughter, Gertrude, and her husband Sam Irwin, moved in with Mr. Sacket. The house was given to the Masonic Brotherhood, by the Irwins and it was later sold to William Nelson in 1951. [1].
