Additional Comments A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Constructed in 1910 (See Bib. Ref. E), this two-story Commercial Vernacular styled retail building features a rectangular shaped plan configuration, a brick exterior, and a flat roof. A stepped parapet and brick corbeling appear above the uppermost story. Rectangualr openings with stone lintels and sills distinguish the second-story windows on the facade. The structure is in excellent condition. Historical Background: The post office in Dodgeville was established in 1834, with William Henry serving as the first postmaster. (See Bib. Ref. A). The federal facility occupied various locations including a frame structure (1894, 1899) on the same site as this brick building, which was constructed in 1910 by Albert Hearn, former editor of the "Dodgeville Chronicle," (106 W. Merrimac Street, 49/29). (See Bib. Ref. E). (Note: Hearn later sold the building to to John Reese. (See Bib. Ref. F)). By 1927, the Reese Building (166 N. Iowa Street, 44/10) on the opposite side of N. Iowa Street housed the post office, while this structure housed Perkins Market. (See Bib. Ref. C, F). In 1954, a new post office building was constructed at 108 W. Merrimac Street, 49/28. (See Bib. Ref. D). Currently, the Dodgeville post office is located in a building on West Division Street.
