POINTED ARCHED WINDOWS AND DOORWAY, CONTRASTING STONE QUOINS AND WINDOW SURROUNDS, STEEP PAVILION ROOF ON ENTRANCE TOWER, ROSE WINDOW IN GABLE. DESIGNED BY MILWAUKEE ARCHITECT HENRY MESSMER. CHURCH HAS LOST IT'S RESIDENT PRIEST AS OF 2002. 2026; The St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church was designed by Swiss-American architect Henry Messmer and completed in 1890. It has a rectilinear plan and stylistic features typical of an Early Gothic Revival-style church. It measures 123 feet long by 54 feet wide, with a bell tower height of 136 feet. The exterior façades present symmetrically and include heavy massing, a vertical silhouette, lancet arches, stain glass, engaged buttresses, and a steeply pitched gable roof. The exterior sits on a stone block foundation and is primarily clad in rough-carved limestone block apart from stone trim around fenestrations, copings, and bell tower quoins. Many window openings feature pointed arches with stained-glass accented in decorative Gothic tracery with modern storms. The steeply pitched gable roof is sheathed in asphalt shingles. The principal elevation (north) fronts onto County Road V and exhibits the original entry. The church’s front gabled form is dominated by a central projecting bell tower and spire. The tower is accented in lancet ventilation louvers, a rose window, trefoil motifs, and a Latin cross finial. It additionally hosts fenestrations containing prayer scripture and the main entry. The centrally located stone transom above the paired tracery windows is inscripted “Sanete Josephe, Ora Pro Nobis.” The gable peak of the main entry is below. It has paired wooden doors, a lancet-shaped fanlight transom of stain glass, and a flat, cantilevered parapet roof. It is accessed by a bank of concrete steps and a ramp, and flanked by tall narrow stain glass accented in tracery and covered by storms. Moving clockwise, the east elevation is seven bays deep. Bays are regularly arranged and spaced with alternating tall and narrow stain glass windows and engaged buttresses. Squared windows are at the basement level. Two appendages are engaged at the eastern wall. Per the date stone, a 2024 addition is attached to the previous 1965 addition. The 1965 addition is one-stories high and similar in length to the 2024 version. It spans half the length of the façade with a rectilinear plan, stone block exterior, and a flat roof. Its paired doors at the north façade are the only fenestration. They are shaded with a flat, cantilevered parapet roof. The 2024 addition created a new entry that fronted the surface parking lot at the church’s rear, as well as elevators and the church’s first bathrooms. The modern appendage has a height of two-stories, a concrete masonry unit blocked foundation, polychrome yellow brick exterior, stone trim and fascia, and a steeply pitched, slightly overhanging front gable roof sheathed in asphalt shingles to match the main roof. It is connected to the 1965 addition by a party wall at the west. The addition’s north façade is adorned with a stone Latin cross. The four eastern windows are tall and narrow, rectangular one-over-one metal sashes in stone trim. At the front façade (south) are full-glass double doors, the original stain glass altar window, and a round gable ornament. The south elevation has few architectural details. A shallow brick chimney is at the gable peak. An 1890 date stone and a small rose window are nearby at the gable face. The infilled altar window is centrally located. The original stain glass moved in 2024 to adorn the new entry addition. At ground level are a set of paired doors, paired glass block windows, and double-hung sashes. The west elevation reflects the eastern arrangement without the additions. associated with St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church Complex: AHI No. 5149, 5150, 5153, 248752, and 248737 2026 - April: the main church building suffered severe damage to its roof when a storm with heavy wind and hail moved through Dane County.
