| Additional Comments |
Built before 1894. The two story brick commercial building displays Romanesque elements for decoration. The most notable feature is the corbelling that follows the cornice. A series of small rounded arches form a decorative band beneath this cornice. A flat parapet rests on top of the roof. Unlike the Pechman Portraits building (which is very similar in design), the size of the original window openings of Carpet Mart has not been reduced." Walking Tour Through Old Kaukauna: Two Self-Guided Historic Tours Kaukauna, Wisconsin, City of Kaukauna, 1983. The brick has been painted and two obstructive signs have been put up: one projects out and the other covers up most of the second floor. There is also a metal canopy. Carerra glass still adorns sections surrounding the storefront window, although it is in need of repair. PREVIOUS OWNERS: Kaunkauna Pulp Co. 1917-1918; W.C. Sullivan, John Scheer 1919-1937; Chas. M. Scheer 1938-1955. It once housed a jewelry and furniture store, and was built between 1890 and 1894. |
