A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, Division of Historic Preservation. This two story school building is built on a raised foundation, making three stories. It is constructed of brick and has a flat roof with a parapet in front. Stone trim is used for belt courses and windows are in banks. They consist of three parts, a sash and a transom. The transoms of the windows have almost all be enclosed. The main entrance sits in a three story entry pavilioin decorated with buttresses, stone courses, and a stone frontispiece. This stone trim has Gothic mannerisms typical of simple collegiate Gothic buildings. Although not elaborate, this building has simple Gothic-inspired details typical of simple Collegiate Gothic buildings. More significantly, few historic school buildings exist in Fond du Lac, making this building important for its type of construction as well. St. Peter's Chu4rch established a school and building in 1863, then erected a new building in 1881. In 1903, still another new building was erected and used until this building was erected in 1925. This building is historically significant for its association with the education of school children in Fond du Lac for many years. Because few historic school buildings are extant, and only one public elementary school building still exists in the city, this building is an important historic resource related to the education of school children in the city. May 2008 - The school was moved to 1600 S. Main St. The building was purchased by Commonwealth Development Corp. which intends to convert it into a reidential-care apartment complex. |
