This two and one-half story Queen Anne house has clapboard siding on the first story, wood shingles on the second story, and a stucco and wood covering on the upper half story. This stucco and wood is executed in a half-timber pattern in steeply-pitched gables. Windows are generally double-hung sashes, irregularly placed on the facade. A veranda wraps aruond the northeast corner of the house. It features a stone foundation and balustrade supporting square brick columns that support a flat roof with wide eaves decorated with modillions. There is a matching carriage house at the rear of the property. This house has the form and massing of the Queen Anne style yet its Tudor details and lack of exuberant details suggest the emerging period revival styles. This was the home of Frederick Rueping (who probably built the house), the president of the Rueping Leather Works during the years he lived in this house (1899-1926). This house is historically significant as the house of Frederick J. Rueping during the time he was president of the Rueping Leather Works, one of Fond du Lac's most important historic industries. Because all of the building associated with the leather works have been demolished, the home of its important owners, takes on historical significance as one of the few extant resources related to this important industry in the community. |
