| Additional Comments | The University Heights Historic District: A Walking Tour: "The simplicity and geometric emphasis that characterized much Prairie School design is especially evident in this exceptionally well designed house by Madison architect Alvan E. Small, done in 1916 for University of Wisconsin professor of plant pathology Aaron G. Johnson and his wife. The design is notable for its economy. The overall shape of the house is a simple side-gabled two-story rectangle. Small took this elementary form and first emphasized its cubic solidity by using plain stucco walls to define the building volume. He then proceeded to emphasize the horizontal aspects of the design by having the walls rise from a base sided in horizontal clapboards and terminate under the wide overhanging eaves of the roof. He further stressed the horizontal by grouping all windows, highlighting those on the second floor by placing them within two thin parallel wooden beltcourses that circle the house, creating a banded appearance. The resulting house is to this day distinctively modern in appearance and is a testament to the quality of the work of its designer." |
