| Additional Comments | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Three-story dark red brick building with original storefronts rises to four stories at corner and on Milwaukee Ave. side, incorporating the 1915 Black Hawk Tavern. The original three-story Green Mountain House was a social center in Fort Atkinson. In 1915 the Black Hawk Tavern was constructed next door on Milwaukee Ave. In a later Jacobean Revival style it featured stone-trimmed multi-centered arched windows on the first floor, a hanging canopy over the door, a gable roof with dormers and a castellated parapet. The old hotel was only used for overflow until 1929 when it was demolished to make way for the large corner addition to the Black Hawk Tavern. The combined structure served as Fort Atkinson's major hostelry for many years thereafter. 2019 - Resurveyed - appearance unchanged. |
