This was the location of the Jaedecke Meat Market before it moved to 607 E. Main St. It was then a meat market under several owners until around 1915 when it was the Walter Nack Meat Market until at least 1930. This building has some historical interest as a long-time meat market. None of the businesses are individually historically significant, but they do contribute to the overall development of commerce in the Main Street Commercial Historic District. Originally constructed as a frame building, this gable roofed building was veneered with red brick between 1884 and 1890 while it was a meat market owned by William Jaedecke. Topped by a plain projecting cornice, the false front is characterized further by segmental arched windows. A plain projected cornice also extends across the storefront that features a central recessed entrance flanked by fluted metal columns. The Jaedecke building has been altered by the addition of metal window sashes on the second floor and by the application of paint to the exterior. A shed roofed, one-story addition is located at the rear. The William Jaedecke building is a vernacular building exhibiting the influence of the Italianate style. Although this building is not architecturally significant, the Jaedecke building contributes to the historic architectural character of the Main Street Comemrcial Historic District. Originally a frame, gable roofed building, this former meat market, brick veneered in the late 1880s, exhibits the false "boomtown front" that was typical of many small commercial buildings in the 19th century. |
