PROJECTING CENTRAL PAVILION W/ IONIC COLONNADE CENTRAL TOWER W/ BALUSTRADE AND CUPOLA 1958-Auditorium additions c. 1990-conversion to apartments historic function is as a school Hawthorne Junior High School was constructed in 1931 and designed by Herbst and Kuenzli Architects. The large school featured an approximate replica of the tower on Independence Hall in Philadelphia and a non-extant swimming pool, which was one of the first pools associated with a school in Milwaukee County. The school was remodeled in 1958 with an addition constructed at the northeast corner of the original school building. The school was eventually closed in 1981. The building was purchased, remodeled, and expanded to double its original size in 1982 as the Hawthorne Terrace Apartments. |
