An English Officer's Description of Wisconsin in 1837, by Frederick Marryat (1792-1848), is an excerpt from Marryat's diaries. Marryat was a naval officer who in 1837 traveled down the Fox River, portaged to the Wisconsin River, then ascended the Mississippi River to St. Paul, and finally descended the Mississippi to St. Louis. Included in his account are descriptions of forests, forts, animals, mining and Indians. (18 pages)
