James Jesse Strang
Text
Newspapers clippings regarding the former Mormon settlement of Voree near Burlington in the 1850s. Clippings from the 1920s discuss the building of a new Mormon meeting place there. Voree was in part founded by James Jesse Strang, a lawyer who converted to Mormonism in the 1840s. Strang had a letter from Joseph Smith declaring him the new religious leader, but many saw him as an imposter in favor of Brigham Young, leading to Strang founding Voree after Young and his followers left for Utah.
