Mendota Canoes
In 2021, Wisconsin Historical Society maritime archaeologists located a 1,200-year-old dugout canoe in Lake Mendota and worked with First Nations to recover the vessel for learning and preservation. A 3,000-year-old canoe followed in 2022, and by 2025, 14 more ancient canoes had been identified in the lakebed. The oldest canoe in the group is carbon dated to around 5,200-years-old and was likely crafted before the Great Pyramid of Giza was built in Egypt. The first recovered canoe is destined for exhibition in the Wisconsin History Center.
