Wisconsin State Capitol Interior — Rotunda
View of the only known view of the first floor Rotunda of the third Wisconsin State Capitol, a remarkable stereograph by Dane County photographer Andreas Larsen Dahl. A group of seven men in suits and hats stand together, and there appears to be a dog sitting at one man's feet. Details documented here include the white marble and black slate floor tiles, the enormous brackets that supported the second floor gallery, the gallery balustrade, and the Italianate detailing of the pillars. Careful observers can look through the Rotunda and see a chandelier and a ceiling medallion that match one in Image ID: 23110 which was photographed after the 1904 fire. |

In 1869 a local journalist noted that the iron pillars and cornices were painted white in imitation of marble and that the cast iron gallery balustrade was painted to resemble green and black marble. In 1873 the "Wisconsin State Journal" reported that the walls of the Rotunda had been tinted pale green with wall panels in light peach and the ceiling of the dome in light blue. |
