The first Temperance Society in the midwest was organized here on September 30, 1847. The first floor was first occupied by C.D. Coles' general store, later by the Mattoon Furniture Company, and (at the time of this photograph) the Lumsden Bandage Co., makers of cheese bandages, owned by Almon Leavons. The house was the second frame house in town and, at the time of the photograph, served as an apartment. |
