National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers
Lake near the home, probably Lake Hincks, which was named after General Edward W. Hincks who was administrator of the Home in the 1870's. The grounds consist of 425 acres which are extensively landscaped with curvilinear drives. According to an 1873 Congressional report: "The situation of the Home...is the finest in the country. The park is excelled by none except it may be Central Park, New York." Two women sit in the foreground under a tree, with other people on the far shore. Caption reads: "The Lake, Soldiers' Home, Milwaukee." |
