Pupils of the 2nd Ward School

Pupils of the 2nd Ward School | Photograph | Wisconsin Historical Society
A group portrait of students at the 2nd Ward School. The students are posing in front of the building, with girls in the front (straw hats on laps), boys in the back, and their teacher is in the back in the middle. On the back of the photograph, in what appears to be a child's handwriting, are the following names (as they are spelled by the writer): Miss Eliza Herfuth, Sidney Ainsworth, Hary Bancroft, Arthur Baker, John Lavery, Bertrand Doyon, Eddie Swain, Clay Beryman, John Nebhour, Harry Deards, Robie Ryder, George Cain, Hary Stollze, Jimmie Livesy, and John Port. There is no indication of which children in the photograph these names apply to.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The 2nd Ward School was built at 720 East Gorham Street in 1867. It was replaced by the Lincoln School building in 1915, which later housed the Madison Art Center from 1964 to 1980, and was converted to apartments in 1985. In the past, the boy at the top right was identified as Frank Lloyd Wright. Based on facts known about the teacher, Elizabeth Herfurth, this photo could not have been taken before the 1881-1882 school year, when Miss Herfurth began teaching Second Primary (roughly equivalent to our third and fourth grades). The clothing of the girls appears to be appropriate to the spring season. Based on the birth dates of known students, they are ages 7-10 in this image. Although Frank Lloyd Wright did attend this school, and may have been there in 1882, he was then 14-15, too old to be in this grade. According to David H. Reynolds in early 2009, his grandfather Edward S. Reynolds is the boy behind the third girl from the left in the second row from the bottom. (He became the father of Henry E. Reynolds, who was Mayor of Madison 1961-65.) Edward Reynolds was born in Dec 1872, so was 4 1/2 years younger than Wright, born in Jun 1867. This adds weight to the evidence that it's unlikely that Wright is one of the students in this photograph.
