The original typewritten caption reads: "Taken during cleanup week at Andover, South Dakota. The old steam tractor which is being hauled to the railroad to be sold as scrap has stood near the highway leading into Andover for a number of years. No doubt it supplied the power for threshing many bushels of grain back in the early days of the self-binder and threshing machine--back in the days when farmers of the neighborhood pooled their efforts at threshing time, and farmers' wives perspired over hot stoves, cooking and baking for ravenous threshing crews. This picture is a striking illustration of how gas has replaced steam." |
