Crops of Peas and Rye
Promotional card depicting the prosperous farming in northern Wisconsin. Caption: "Here is shown a mixed crop of peas and rye, the clover in the foreground has just been cut. Generally speaking, land which supported a good hardwood timber growth will do equally well in the raising of farm products. The vacant lands are just as good as these and there are yet some to be had on easy terms. Above view was taken in July 1897, near Phillips, Price County, Wis." |

Part of the promotional materials created by the Wisconsin Central Railroad Company Land Commissioner to publicize the sale of land in northern Wisconsin, primarily in Price, Taylor, and Ashland counties, owned by the railroad, circa 1895. One side of the card has illustrations of farming conditions, crops, forest resources, homesteads, small towns, and rural scenes in northern Wisconsin. A number of the illustrations are from photographs made by Harvey J. Perkins for "Northern Wisconsin: a hand-book for the homeseeker" and "Hand book of Price County." The reverse side of the card has text touting the abundance of resources available in northern Wisconsin, some of which was taken from "Northern Wisconsin: a hand-book for the homeseeker," edited by William A. Henry. |
