agriculturalist, b. Duisburg, Germany. He migrated to the U.S. and to Wisconsin in 1847. After working briefly in the Wisconsin pineries, he moved to Galena, Ill., then to St. Louis, Mo., and traveled extensively in the West as an employee of the American Fur Company. Returning to Wisconsin in 1855, he settled on a farm in Dunn County, where he became famous for his success in swine production. A frequent speaker at farmers' institutes, he was among those instrumental in introducing swine raising into northern Wisconsin, Minnesota, and North and South Dakota.
