Magoon, Henry Sterling 1832 - 1889 | Wisconsin Historical Society

teacher, lawyer, politician, Congressman, b. Monticello. He graduated from Western Military College, Drennan, Ky. (1853), studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1857. He taught ancient languages at Nashville (Tenn.) Univ. (1855-1857), and in 1857 returned to Wisconsin and set up a law practice at Shullsburg. A Republican, he served one term as district attorney of Lafayette County. In 1864 he moved his practice to Darlington, and in 1865 served as a regent of the Univ. of Wisconsin. He was state senator (1871-1872), and in 1874 was elected to Congress and served one term (Mar. 1875-Mar. 1877). From 1877 until his death he practiced law in Milwaukee. Biog. Dir. Amer. Cong.
