Marks, Solon 1827 - 1914 | Wisconsin Historical Society

physician, surgeon, b. Stockbridge, Vt. He moved to Wisconsin in 1848, and in 1853 graduated from Rush Medical College (Chicago). He began to practice medicine at Jefferson, Wis., and later moved to Stevens Point. During the Civil War, he served as surgeon (with the rank of major) in the 10th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry (1861), was soon detached to serve as brigade surgeon, and later placed in charge of military hospitals in the area of Huntsville, Ala. From 1862 to 1864 he was chief surgeon of the 1st Division, 14th Army Corps. After leaving the service in 1864, he returned to Wisconsin and settled in Milwaukee where he practiced medicine, was appointed chief surgeon of St. Mary's Hospital (1866), and was surgeon for the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul R.R. (1870-1901). He was a member of the Wisconsin Board of Health (1876-1902), and served as its president (1882--1902). He was vice-president of the American Surgical Association (1898) and president of the Wisconsin State Medical Society (1870). In 1895 he was appointed professor of military surgery, fractures, and dislocations in the Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons, and served in this capacity until his death.
