professor of home economics, b. Manhattan, Kans. She graduated from Kansas State College (B.S., 1888; M.S., 1890). From 1890 to 1909 she taught home economics, first in Utah and later in Rhode Island. In 1909 she came to the Univ. of Wisconsin to become the first director of the home economics department, serving in this capacity until her retirement as emeritus professor in 1939. Under her leadership, a curriculum was established, more specialized work was provided, and emphasis was placed on teaching and extension work. In her department she advocated a broad type of training, which included work in the sciences and liberal arts as well as vocational training. During World War I, she assisted in drawing up a plan for state cooperation in the food-conservation program. After retiring in 1939, she continued to make her home in Madison until her death.
