banker, b. Concordville, Pa. He moved to Milwaukee in 1847 and opened a private banking business under the firm name of Samuel Marshall and Co. In 1849 he formed a partnership with Charles F. Ilsley (q.v.), and together they conducted a banking business until 1888 when the firm was incorporated under state law as the Marshall and Ilsley Bank. In 1853 Marshall established the State Bank of Madison, the first state bank organized under the general banking law of 1852. He was president of the State Bank of Madison (1853-1890), and president of the Marshall and Ilsley Bank (1888-1901). Wis. Mag. Hist., 32; Biog. Dict.... Wis. ...
