Martin, James Baynard 1814 - 1878 | Wisconsin Historical Society

businessman, banker, flour miller, b. Baltimore, Md. He attended St. Mary's College (Baltimore), and in 1845 moved to Milwaukee where he engaged in grain trading, banking, and real estate, and later in flour milling. In 1849 he constructed "Martin's Block" and in 1852 "Iron Block," the first large buildings in the city. He was the proprietor of the Reliance Flouring Mills (1869-1878), president of the Wisconsin State Bank in Milwaukee (1866-1868), and served in executive capacities with several other Milwaukee financial establishments.
