physician, politician, Congressman, b. Meadville, Pa. He attended Allegheny College (Meadville, Pa.) and graduated from Cleveland Medical College (M.D., 1848). He practiced medicine in Crawford County, Pa. (1848-1856), and in 1856 moved to Wisconsin, settling in Plover. A Republican, he was state assemblyman (1862) and state senator (1863-1864). He was a Republican presidential elector for Lincoln and Johnson in 1864, and in 1872 was elected to Congress from the 8th district and served one term (Mar. 1873-Mar. 1875). He was a member of the board of managers of the Wisconsin State Hospital for the Insane at Mendota (1862-1868), and served as medical superintendent of that institution (1868-1873, 1875). Biog. Dir.
