teacher, educator, politician, b. Perthshire, Scotland. He attended the Univ. of Aberdeen and King's College (Aberdeen). He migrated to the U.S. and to Wisconsin in 1857, settling first in Wausau, and then in Waupaca, where he was high school principal and teacher at Waupaca and Farmington (1858-1864). McGregor graduated from Lawrence College (A.B., 1862), and during the Civil War served as captain of Company A, 42nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry (1864-1865). Returning to Waupaca after the war, he was high school principal until 1867. In 1867 he was appointed professor of mathematics at Platteville State Normal School, and later became professor of the theory and practice of teaching, serving in this capacity until 1878. He was president of Platteville state normal (1878-1894), but resigned in 1894 because of political differences with the board of normal regents, and returned to teaching as professor of pedagogy. He was again elected president of Platteville in 1898, retaining this position until 1904. From 1904 until his death he served as a member of the state board of normal school regents.
