educator, librarian, b. Beloit. He attended Beloit College, and graduated from Racine College (B.A., 1882; M.A., 1884). He was instructor at Racine College (1885-1886), headmaster at Markham Academy in Milwaukee (1886-1887), and from 1887 to 1894 taught at Milwaukee High School. He was principal of West Division high school (1896-1910), and from 1910 until his death was librarian of the Milwaukee Public Library. Under his direction the services of the Milwaukee Public Library were greatly expanded, branch libraries were established, the Municipal Reference Library was organized (1911), and foreign- language departments were added.
