railroad manager and executive, b. Hartford, Pa. He served in the Union army (1862-1865) during the Civil War, and rose to the rank of 1st lieutenant. He attended Hamilton College, Clinton, N.Y. (1865-1866), and later worked for various railroads in Indiana and Illinois. In 1882 he became vice-president of the Western Indiana R.R., and in 1883 moved to Milwaukee where he became assistant to the general manager of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul R.R. He was general manager (1885-1888) and president (1888-1903) of this line. In 1889 he moved to Chicago, and in 1903 to New York City where he served as chairman of the board of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul R.R. until his death. A. W.
