lawyer, newspaperman, politician, Congressman, b. Willow Springs, near Darlington, Lafayette County. He read law, was admitted to the bar in 1878, and practiced in Mineral Point for two years. In 1880 he returned to Darlington, where he served as district attorney, and in 1883 became co-editor of the Darlington Republican. He was editor of this paper from 1885 until 1900, when it was merged with the Darlington journal as the Republican-Journal. He then edited the Darlington Republican-Journal (1900-1903, 1914-1918). A Republican, Monahan was a delegate to the national convention of 1888, and in 1894 was an unsuccessful candidate for the Republican nomination for governor. From 1900 to 1908 he was collector of internal revenue for the 2nd Wisconsin district, and in 1918 was elected to Congress and served one term (Mar. 1919-Mar. 1921).
