historian, professor, author, b. Bristol, R.I. He graduated from Brown Univ. (B.A., 1887; A.M., 1890). He did graduate work in Europe, and while studying at Freiburg in Breisgau, Germany (1890) developed an intense interest in the Crusades, a study that occupied the rest of his life. He returned to the U.S. in 1890, did postgraduate work at the Univ. of Pennsylvania, and taught there from 1893 to 1902. In 1902 he came to the Univ. of Wisconsin as professor of European history, serving in this capacity until 1915. From 1915 until his death he was professor of medieval history at Princeton Univ. An outstanding teacher, Munro's rigorous insistence upon scientific method in historiography influenced a generation of younger scholars. Among his writings are The Middle Ages (1902) and an edition of J. Paetow's, A Guide to the Study of Medieval History (1931). Munro was president of the American Historical Association (1925-1926), managing editor of the American Historical Review (1928-1929), and chairman of the board of the American Council of Learned Societies (1928-1933).
