Historical Essay
Necedah
Origin of Necedah, Wisconsin
From the Ho-Chunk word for "yellow"(Wisconsin Historical Collections 8:396), after the Yellow River. Verwyst calls it a corruption of Nissida (Ojibwe), meaning "let there be three of us," but settlers were much less likely to have picked up words from the Ojibwe than from the Ho-Chunk in that vicinity in the mid-19th century.
