Dictionary of Wisconsin History.

The name, if of Native American origin, indicates this particular spot on the La Crosse river...In the summer of 1858 the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad was built through the town and located the station at Salem (afterward changed to West Salem, their being another Salem in Kenosha County)... The merchants of Neshonoc removed their building from Neshonoc to Salem and transferred their merchandise.
