The New York Recording Laboratories (NYRL) operated between 1917 and 1933 as a subsidiary of the Wisconsin Chair Company (q.v.) of Port Washington, Wisconsin. The NYRL is best remembered for its issues of jazz and blues recordings on the Paramount 12000 and 13000 "race" series. During a ten-year period the company issued more than 1,150 records in this series, permanently preserving some of the nation's earliest recordings of popular African American music.Learn More
