Newhall, Daniel 1821 - 1895 | Wisconsin Historical Society

pioneer grain dealer, businessman, b. Conway, Mass. He moved to Milwaukee in 1844, where he at first engaged in the grocery business. In 1846 he began his career in the grain-trading business, and soon gained the reputation of being the largest individual grain dealer in the West, eventually operating a fleet of lake sailing vessels to ship grain to eastern markets. In 1854 he built the Badger Warehouse, and in 1856-1857 the Newhall House. He was an early member and president (1861-1862) of the Milwaukee Chamber of Commerce, and also served as a director of several Milwaukee financial establishments.
