lawyer, politician, judge, b. Durham, Greene County, N.Y. He graduated from Hamilton College (Clinton, N.Y.) in 1857, was admitted to the bar, and in 1858 moved to Wisconsin, settling in Trempealeau. He set up a law practice in Trempealeau, and was active in local politics. A Republican, he was state assemblyman (1863), state senator (1868-1869), and in 1876 was elected circuit judge of the 13th judicial district. He served in this capacity from 1877 to 1878, when the circuits were reorganized and Trempealeau County was included in the 6th circuit. Newman continued as judge of the 6th circuit until 1893, when he was elected to the state supreme court. He served as a member of the state supreme court bench from 1894 until his death. J. R.
