lawyer, politician, b. Hartford. He graduated from the Univ. of Wisconsin (LL.B., 1882), and set up a law practice in Madison. A Democrat, he was district attorney for Dane County, city attorney of Madison, and in 1890 was elected state attorney general, serving two terms (1891-1895).
